Certified Organic Farming

There is no innovation, nor modernity, without protecting nature, the earth and the landscape, all elements that represent the very core of that territorial identity that Firriato, throughout its production history, has always tried to preserve with passion and awareness. A philosophy of life that finds its most emblematic reflection precisely in the management of agriculture, being this conduct using the best practices of environmental sustainability, starting from a fundamental basis: compliance with the dictates of the very strict European standard on certified organic agriculture. Firriato has always respected these principles from its foundation until 2007, when the new reference legislation was published and from that day, each cycle, each agronomic year, are carried out under the aegis of the European regulation Reg. CE 834/07.

Milestones

Organic production is a global farm management and agri-food production system based on the interaction between best environmental practices, a high level of biodiversity, the protection of natural resources, the application of rigorous criteria … omissis … for products obtained with natural substances and processes. “” This is the definition of European legislation that Firriato has structurally incorporated into its corporate philosophy, with the aim of creating a basis for a production system that measures its impact on environment and every day ensures the highest degree of environmental sustainability. Therefore, any type of synthetic chemical and genetically modified organism, not the use of chemical treatments and fertilizers, is banned. Yes, instead, to a viticulture of precision that allows you to monitor the health, vigor and physiological needs of the vines belonging to different zone of the vineyard, adapting the cultivation techniques to the needs that arise, to achieve what has always been Firriato’s first goal: to produce quality, healthy and perfectly ripe grapes, together with the natural grassing of the rows, with the green manure that cancels the ‘external release in nitrogen fertilizers, to the techniques of management of the bunch and the foliage, and to the protection of erosion and soil fertility.

The entire agronomic management of the vineyards - but also of the olive groves - responds to a rigorous disciplinary regime of organic production

The aridoculture regime, the natural grassing of the rows, the green manure that cancels the external release in nitrogen fertilizers. Organic is based on precision viticulture.

No treatment, no synthetic chemistry, no to fertilizers. Yes to manual soil and bunch and canopy management techniques, the use of renewable energy to support work in the cellar

In 2012, Firriato obtained the certification of conformity to the EU regulation 834/07 / CE on organic farming production from BioAgriCert and, subsequently, the worldwide certification applicable to vegan products from the DNV-GL

Grassing creates competition for nutrients and water, allows you to manage the vigor of the plants and regulate the microclimate

Our "Commandments"

Absence of synthetic chemicals, such as fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, pesticides in general, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Use of natural fertilizers such as manure and other composted organic substances. “Green manure” is also used, a technique that consists in burying plants that enrich the soil after harvesting, such as clover, mustard, field bean.

Use of natural plant, animal or mineral substances to defend crops in case of need. Extracts of plants, pest predatory insects, rock flour or natural minerals are able to correct the structure and chemical characteristics of the soil and combat “weeds”

Crop rotation for grassing: you must avoid growing the same plant on the same ground for several seasons in a row. In this way, parasites are prevented from finding favorable environments in which to proliferate. In addition, the nutrients present in the soil are also used in a less intensive and more rational way.

Mulching and / or Planting of hedges and trees: in addition to preserving the landscape, they host the natural predators of the pests and act as a physical barrier to any external pollution.

Association: it is the cultivation of different plants, one unwelcome to the other’s pests.
